Egypt to Pay for Repairs of Bombed Italian Consulate in Cairo

Egypt's Foreign Ministry spokesman has announced that the Egyptian government will pay for restoring and repairing the Italian Consulate after a car bombing there.

"It is considered an important historical building, to say nothing of the relationships of friendship that join Egypt and Italy," Badr Abdel Atty said in a statement.

The blast early Saturday heavily damaged several floors of the Italian Consulate building, leaving a gaping hole.

The bombing, claimed by an affiliate of the Islamic State group, killed one person and injured ten.

An explosion in front of the Italian Consulate in Cairo killed one, injured ten early Saturday

In a phone call with his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry, Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni pledged his country’s support for Egypt’s “war on terrorism” following an bomb explosion outside the Italian Consulate in Cairo on Saturday, a statement by the Egyptian foreign ministry read.

The explosion at the consulate on Galaa Street in downtown Cairo took place at around 6:00am local time. One person was killed and ten injured, according to health ministry statements.

Gentiloni commented on Twitter that Italy “would not be intimidated” by the attack.

He noted that the victim was not Italian.

Shoukry told his Italian counterpart that Egypt, with support from Italy, should intensify its efforts in the fight against terrorism, according to the ministry statement.

In a subsequent phonecall, Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi told Gentiloni that such incidents show the importance of international cooperative efforts to fight terrorism.

El-Sisi told the Italian foreign minister that Egypt “pays all necessary attention” to each diplomatic and consulate mission on its territories.

Italy not intimidated by Cairo consulate attack: Minister

Italy will not be intimidated by the deadly bombing of its consulate in Cairo, Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni said on Saturday

"Bombing against our consulate in Cairo, there are no Italian victims," Gentiloni tweeted shortly after the attack that left left one person dead.

"Our thoughts are with the people affected and with our personnel. Italy will not let itself be intimidated."

A powerful explosion in Cairo that occurred in front of the Italian consulate in the city centre on Saturday morning left at least one killed and ten injured.
