Ghana TUC Demands Arrest of Boss of Gateway Logistics Company
Kofi Asamoah, Secretary General of the TUC
The Trades Union Congress, TUC, is calling for the arrest and prosecution of the Managing Director of Gateway Logistics Limited in Tarkoradi, Manlio Maggiorotto.
Mr. is Maggiorotto reported to have chained a Ghanaian employee of the company, Ibrahim Sanou to a container for loitering around during working hours.
In a statement, Secretary General Kofi Asamoah described the act as shameful and dehumanising.
He noted that the restriction of the movement of Sanou is not only a breach of his fundamental right to movement but goes to the core of his basic right to humane and dignified treatment, as guaranteed by the Constitution.
The statement said managers of the said company are said to have created a white supremacist working environment that encourages the intimidation and abuse of workers which has ultimately resulted in the latest maltreatment of Sanou.
The TUC is therefore demanding a formal and public apology from the company to the victim, the working people of Ghana and Ghanaians as a whole.
The statement says the TUC and the Transport and Petroleum Workers Union will leave no stone unturned in ensuring the proper redress of this matter.
It calls on the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations and the Ghana Employers’ Association to join hands with labour to ensure the protection of workers ‘rights and to guarantee that no employer has the audacity to repeat this barbarous act in the country.
