Ould Salek Calls on Security Council to Set Deadline for Organization of Self-determination Referendum

Algiers, May 9, 2016 (SPS) - Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohamed Salem Ould Salek called on Sunday, in Algiers, the United Nations Security Council to set deadline and fix a date for the organization of a self-determination referendum.
Following his talks with Algerian Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ramtane Lamamra, the head of the Sahrawi diplomacy called on the Security Council, the first official of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) to set a deadline and fix a date for the organization of a referendum.
He also called for “the return of MINURSO so that it carries out its missions.”
The United Nations has a mission in Western Sahara since 1991, which is responsible for organizing the referendum, but the latter has never been implemented because “Morocco impedes UN’s steps aimed at restoring peace,” he said.
Faced with this deadlock, he hoped that “the Security Council assumes all its responsibilities and takes the necessary measures in this regard.”
The Sahrawi minister insisted on the need for the Security Council to impose sanctions on Morocco which, he said, “refuses to comply with the international legality,” underlining what was signed in this regard “after sixteen (16) years of war and long years of negotiations under the aegis of the United Nations which is the guarantor of what it was signed in the same way as the African Union.”
