Iran's Top Negotiator to Invite Ashton to Resume Nuclear Talks

Iran's Top Negotiator to Invite Ashton to Resume N. Talks

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran's chief negotiator Saeed Jalili is due to write a letter to the EU foreign policy chief to propose a new round of nuclear talks between Tehran and the six world powers (the five permanent UN Security Council members plus Germany).

Jalili, who is the Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, would write to EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton to say Iran is ready for fresh talks to ease the West's so-called concerns over Iran's nuclear program.

"Jalili will soon send a letter to Catherine Ashton over the format of negotiations ... then fresh talks will take place with major powers," Iran's Ambassador to Germany Alireza Sheikh Attar said.

Sheikh Attar is presumably due to deliver Jalili's letter to Ashton.

The last round of talks between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council - the United States, Russia, China, Britain and France - plus Germany (P5+1) ended in January.

Ashton, leading the European negotiators, wrote to Jalili in October and has not yet had a reply, her spokesman Michael Mann said, adding that the bloc was open to talks with Tehran.

Analysts believe that Tehran is seeking to send a message to the West that it should think twice about the economic costs of increasing pressure on Iran.

Iranian Oil Minister Rostam Qassemi told Saturday's weekly Aseman that further sanctions would push oil over $200 a barrel.
