Zambia President Inaugurated for Second Term After Disputed Vote and Opposition Arrests

9:00 AM EDT, September 1, 2026

LUSAKA, Zambia (AP) — Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema was inaugurated Tuesday to begin his second term after a disputed election that saw some opposition leaders arrested and the country’s courts closed for legal appeals to the election outcomes.

Hichilema was sworn-in at an event at the National Heroes Stadium in the capital Lusaka in front of thousands of supporters.

Hichilema was declared the election winner on Aug. 18 with around 60% of the presidential vote, according to the Electoral Commission of Zambia. The southern African nation has held largely peaceful elections since it returned to multiparty democracy in 1991.

His main challenger, opposition leader Brian Mundubile, received around 38% of the vote. He then claimed voting irregularities and rejected the election results.

The inauguration was attended by several African leaders including Kenya President William Ruto, Botswana President Duma Boko and Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Hichilema addressed the crowd of supporters at the stadium, saying the voices of those who voted for the opposition had also been heard through a democratic process.

“We receive your support with humility and with a clear understanding of the responsibility it places upon our shoulders. To those who chose other candidates or other parties, we say with equal sincerity, we have heard you,” Hichilema said.

The election outcome has been marred by reports of the arrest of Mundubile and his running mate, Makebu Zulu. Local media reported the two are being held at the Mukobeko Maximum Security Prison in central Zambia.

Mundubile said he went into hiding in fear for his life after he disputed the results and security forces raided his home the day after the elections. He and Zulu surrendered to police on Aug. 24 after seeking refuge at a United Nations building.

Kenya Aviation Workers End Strike that Paralyzed Airport Operations in the Capital

2:45 AM EDT, September 1, 2026

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Kenyan aviation workers on Tuesday called off a strike that paralyzed air traffic for two days at the main international airport in the capital Nairobi.

Moss Ndiema, head of the Kenya Aviation Workers Union, said the strike that started Sunday had been called off immediately. The go-slow strike ended after the union reached an agreement with Kenya Airports Authority and others.

The strike left many travelers stranded by cancellations and flight delays.

Hellen Moraa, who was heading to the Netherlands via Dubai for business, said at the airport that the delays could cost her financially.

“It is unfair,” she said Monday.

Operations at airports elsewhere in Kenya also were affected by the strike. Unionized members alleged unfair staff hiring practices, poor compensation and proposed changes to the management of Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

The airport has been plagued by intermitted industrial action as unionized workers demand better pay and working conditions.

A similar strike in February stranded passengers at the airport, a major transport hub for regional and international travel.

US Embassies Urge Americans in West Asia to Prepare for Escalation

By Al Mayadeen English

US embassies across West Asia issue alerts warning of possible escalation, flight cancellations, and airspace closures amid the US war on Iran.

US embassies in West Asia issued security alerts on Tuesday, telling American nationals in the region to stay alert, prepare for possible flight disruptions, and weigh leaving amid fears of a sudden escalation.

The US embassy to the United Arab Emirates said the security situation remained volatile, with the possibility of an unplanned escalation, and advised Americans in the region to stay on guard and watch for flight cancellations, airspace shutdowns, and other travel disruptions.

Washington's missions in "Israel," Jordan, Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Oman put out comparable warnings.

The warnings were issued before the US launched a wide-scale aggression targeting southern Iran, with explosions reported across Bandar Abbas, Qeshm Island, Konarak, Jask, Sirik, and Minab. CENTCOM said the attacks began at 12 pm Eastern Time on Tuesday, claiming its forces were targeting IRGC positions in response to alleged IRGC attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and on US military personnel in the region.

The US attacks were met with retaliation from Iran's armed forces. The IRGC announced it had launched retaliatory operations against US assets, and reported shooting down the 50th US MQ-9 Reaper drone using an Iranian air defense system. Iranian media also reported explosions at US bases in Jordan and in Erbil, Iraq, with Tasnim News Agency noting that Jordanian air defenses were activated.

The retaliation followed a warning from Iran's Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters that continued US strikes on Sistan and Baluchistan and Hormozgan would be met with devastating and crushing blows against the American side, and that Washington's continued aggression would bring heavier consequences.

Iran Says Struck US Marine Base in Jordan with Ballistic Missiles

By Al Mayadeen English

Iran says it struck Camp Titin in Jordan with ballistic missiles, while the Iranian Army reported attacks on US positions at Bahrain's Sheikh Isa Air Base.

Iranian forces said they carried out separate attacks against US military positions in Jordan and Bahrain, targeting a US Marine Corps base in Jordan with ballistic missiles and US facilities at Sheikh Isa Air Base in Bahrain with another operation.

The Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) said it targeted a US Marine Corps base in Jordan known as Camp Titin with ballistic missiles, claiming the strike killed a large number of US forces and destroyed several important facilities and attack helicopters.

Meanwhile, the Iranian Army said it targeted radar installations and US troop gathering points at Sheikh Isa Air Base in Bahrain as part of the 29th phase of Operation Saegheh.

IRGC: Ballistic missiles struck Camp Titin

The IRGC said its forces targeted Camp Titin, a facility belonging to the US Marine Corps in Jordan, with ballistic missiles.

According to the IRGC, the strike resulted in the deaths of a large number of US forces stationed at the camp. It also said several important facilities and attack helicopters were destroyed in the attack.

The IRGC did not provide a specific figure for the number of US personnel it said were killed or give further details about the extent of the damage.

Tasnim: Camp Titin holds strategic importance

Iranian news agency Tasnim described Camp Titin as being located in a strategically important position at the northern end of the Red Sea, near the ports of Aqaba and Eilat.

The agency said the camp is located a short distance from the Saudi border and is suitable for US Marine Corps training and the protection of maritime infrastructure.

Tasnim said Camp Titin has particular importance for the US Marine Corps and for the rapid deployment of forces.

The agency further reported that the US had sought to deploy part of its forces at Camp Titin on the assumption that Iran did not possess complete intelligence on the facility.

Tasnim said the IRGC's strike demonstrated that it had detailed intelligence on US military movements, adding that the operation showed an extensive capability to target and surprise US forces.

The agency described the targeting of Camp Titin as a “special and strategic” step in the US-Israeli war against Iran.

Iranian Army: US positions targeted in Bahrain

The Iranian Army said it targeted radar installations and US troop gathering points at Sheikh Isa Air Base in Bahrain during the 29th phase of Operation Saegheh.

The Army described Sheikh Isa Air Base as one of the most important and sensitive US bases in the Gulf region.

It did not provide further details on the extent of the damage or casualties resulting from the attack.

Security-political sources told Al Mayadeen that the Iranian response during the night was “powerful, precise and destructive,” targeting US bases and military centers across the region.

The sources did not provide specific casualty figures or details on individual facilities targeted in the attacks.

US commits yet another massacre in Iran

The Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) said a US attack on a residential house in Sirik, southern Iran, killed and wounded around 50 people, including a child, during a wedding ceremony.

In a statement, the IRGC Public Relations Department said the house had been hosting the marriage ceremony of a young couple when it was targeted in a brutal attack. It said the casualties had revived memories of the brutality of Minab School and Lamerd Stadium.

The IRGC said several people were killed in the attack, including a child, and accused the US military of demonstrating what it described as deep hostility toward the Iranian people.

US aggression expands across Iran

The latest attacks form part of an expanding US war on Iran, with Washington striking targets inside the Islamic Republic while simultaneously threatening further escalation should Tehran retaliate.

US aggression has included attacks on Iranian territory and targets in strategic areas along the country’s southern coast, bringing the confrontation increasingly close to the Strait of Hormuz. Washington has justified its actions through claims concerning Iranian activity in the strategic waterway and Tehran’s attacks on US military positions in the region.

The escalation has also placed growing pressure on US military assets and defensive capabilities. Iran’s sustained use of missiles and drones has forced US forces to expend costly air-defense interceptors while attempting to counter Iranian attacks, creating additional strain on American weapons stocks.

US Launches Fresh Attacks on Southern Iran

By Al Mayadeen English

1 Sep 2026 21:23

New US strikes target Iran as explosions are reported across its southern coast, intensifying the confrontation over the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

The United States has launched a fresh wave of attacks against Iran, with explosions reported across several strategic locations along the country’s southern coast, including Bandar Abbas, Qeshm Island, Konarak, Jask, Sirik, and Minab.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the attacks began at 12 p.m. Eastern Time on Tuesday, claiming that US forces were targeting Iran's Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) positions.

CENTCOM claims that the attacks followed what Washington described as attempted IRGC attacks against commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and US military personnel deployed in the region. The statement represents the US justification for the latest escalation.

The renewed attacks come only days after US forces struck two launchers on Iran’s Larak Island, prompting an Iranian response against US military facilities in Jordan and the UAE.

Explosions reported across southern Iran

Iranian media reported explosions in multiple locations as the US attacks unfolded.

Iranian television reported explosions in eastern Bandar Abbas, while four explosions were heard near Masen village on Qeshm Island. Further blasts were reported in the port city of Jask and in Minab, both in Hormozgan province.

Tasnim News Agency reported six explosions in Konarak and eight on Qeshm Island.

The reported locations are significant because they span a large section of Iran’s southern maritime infrastructure, extending from the Strait of Hormuz toward the Gulf of Oman. Bandar Abbas and Qeshm sit adjacent to one of the world's most strategically important maritime chokepoints, while Jask and Chabahar provide Iran with access to waters beyond the Strait.

The scale and precise targets of Tuesday's attacks remain unclear, and Iranian authorities have not yet provided a comprehensive assessment of damage or casualties.

Iran responds to US aggression

Iran's Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters announced that Iran will deliver a "crushing" blow after the US aggression on various sites along the nation's southern coast.

"In response to the US military's aerial aggression against points in Sistan and Baluchistan and Hormozgan, the armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran will deliver devastating and crushing blows to the cowardly and evil American enemy," the statement read.

The headquarters further added that it will face heavier consequences and its troops will bear greater losses if it continues attacking Iran and the region.

"The more the American terrorist army insists on continuing its evil actions in the region, the greater the losses and heavier the consequences it will bear," it said.  "We have repeatedly declared and are determined that we will not compromise under any circumstances on the rights of the heroic Iranian people, and we will impose heavy costs on the American enemy."

Hormuz remains at the center of escalation

The latest US operation comes amid an intensifying confrontation over the Strait of Hormuz, where Washington has sought to constrain Iran’s military and maritime capabilities.

The geography of the reported attacks underscores the strategic stakes. Iran has developed coastal defenses, missile capabilities, surveillance systems, and alternative maritime infrastructure along its southern coastline, strengthening its ability to operate beyond a single point of access.

Previous US operations have also targeted Iranian military and coastal capabilities. The repeated focus on these areas highlights Washington’s efforts to weaken Iran’s ability to exert military pressure around Hormuz.

At the same time, Iran’s missile and air-defense capabilities have remained a central factor in the confrontation, complicating US efforts to establish uncontested military control over the strategic waterway.

The renewed attacks therefore mark more than another exchange of fire: they deepen the confrontation over Iran’s sovereignty, maritime access and ability to deter further US military pressure.

Trump warns of greater response

US President Donald Trump stated in a Truth Social post following the US attack on Iran that if Tehran retaliates to the American aggression, Washington will increase its ferocity.

"If the failed Nation of Iran retaliates for this very justified attack, they will be hit again at a much harder and higher level," he wrote, adding that "it will not be the biggest attack of them all, that is waiting in the wings and, when it is over, there will be very little left of the Islamic Republic of Iran!"

Trump said that the US attacks were in retaliation for alleged Iranian attempts to install mines in the Strait of Hormuz and the Islamic Republic's retaliation to US attacks by targeting its bases in Jordan.

‘Large Number of US Forces Killed’ as Iran’s Armed Forces Launch Wholesale Retaliation: IRGC

Tuesday, 01 September 2026 9:10 PM

Frame grab from footage released on September 1, 2026 shows Iran’s Armed Forces firing a Kheibar Shekan ballistic missile against US interests in Jordan.

Iran’s Armed Forces begin staging a series of combined retaliatory operations featuring missile and drone strikes targeting regional American bases and interests following the United States’ latest acts of deadly unprovoked aggression against the Islamic Republic.

The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) announced the launch of the operations in a statement on Tuesday.

“Decisive operations by the Iranian Armed Forces in response to the American terrorist enemy began minutes ago,” the Corps said. “US bases and interests across the region are now coming under attack by Iranian missiles and drones,” it added.

The operations follow multiple instance of unwarranted aggression against targets inside the Islamic Republic, especially the country’s southern areas.

Reprisal follows civilian casualties

The latest instance of the aggression featured a missile attack targeting the southern Iranian province of Hormozgan’s Sirik County, where shrapnel hit a residential structure in the city of Kouhestak as the building was hosting a wedding ceremony.

So far, as many as four people have been martyred, including a child, and 50 others wounded.

The Corps lamented that the attack had revived poignant memories of the brutality that was staged against civilian targets during the last round of American-Israeli aggression against Iran that took place from February 28 until April 7.

It cited enemy attacks against a school in the city of Minab in Hormozgan Province and a sports complex in the city of Lamerd in Fars, another southern Iranian province, during which hundreds of innocent civilians were martyred.

Earlier attacks had also hit Chabahar and Konarak Counties in Sistan and Baluchestan, another southern Iranian province, and the Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz, prompting Iranian servicemen to stage a reprisal against US forces stationed in Jordan and the United Arab Emirates.

‘US aggression only complicates Hormuz’s closure’

The IRGC underlined that these attacks have only determined the Islamic Republic to reinforce the closure it has imposed on the Strait of Hormuz in response to previous American violations and “strengthened the resolve of our warriors to crush the foreign forces interfering in Hormuz.”

The ongoing reprisal, it added, “will make the aggressors regret their actions.”

According to the Corps, the first stage of the reprisal has seen Iran’s new-generation aerospace defense system shoot down the 50th advanced MQ-9 drone belonging to the American aggressor.

US personnel fatalities

Later, the IRGC’s Aerospace Force “carried out a heavy ballistic-missile strike against the US Marine barracks known as Camp Titiin in Jordan, located on the shores of the Gulf of Aqaba,” the Corps said in a second statement.

“The attack killed a large number of US personnel and destroyed several key facilities and the enemy’s attack helicopters.”

The IRGC, meanwhile, hailed the popular support that has been staged nationwide for the Armed Forces’ steadfast defense of the country in the face of the aggressors.

“Your continued presence has exhausted and frustrated the American enemy, while the resistance and strength demonstrated by your brave warriors in the Strait of Hormuz have pestered the rulers of the White House,” the IRGC concluded, addressing the public.

US Confuses Negotiation with Dictating Terms: Iran Foreign Ministry Spokesman

Tuesday, 01 September 2026 2:24 PM

Spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry Esmaeil Baqaei speaks during a press briefing in Tehran on September 1, 2026.

The spokesman for Iran’s Foreign Ministry has sharply criticized the conduct of US diplomats during indirect talks with Iranian representatives, saying Washington has mistaken negotiation for dictation.

Speaking at his weekly press briefing in the capital, Tehran, on Tuesday, Esmaeil Baqaei said the main problem with the United States is that it confuses negotiations with “dictating terms” and assumes it can impose its demands on others, an approach that, he stressed, will not work with the Islamic Republic of Iran.

“There is no doubt that American officials are confused in their approaches and statements; but this does not permit us to overlook our capabilities. We will utilize diplomatic means wherever necessary to elaborate on our stances and uphold the rights of the Iranian nation,” Baqaei stated.

He added that the Foreign Ministry appraises unfolding developments on the basis of national interests, and implements whatever is decided by relevant authorities.

The Iranian diplomat further noted that Tehran is closely monitoring the other side’s movements, stressing that Iran’s armed forces will not leave any act of aggression unanswered.

Regarding US hostile actions against Iran, he said such behavior was nothing new for the Islamic Republic, noting that Washington has repeatedly taken hostile measures under various pretexts and received the necessary response.

Iran says the US

Baqaei also pointed to the visits of high-ranking officials from Oman, Qatar, and Pakistan to Tehran, stressing that Iran’s national interests determine its approach to negotiations with the United States.

He said decisions are made based on the prevailing circumstances and what is required to safeguard those interests.

He also emphasized that Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Asim Munir, “carried neither a positive message nor a negative one” during his visit to Iran.

He explained that the visit was in line with Pakistan’s role as a friendly and neighboring country, and falls within the framework of Islamabad’s efforts in recent months to help reduce tensions.

Baqaei highlighted that de-escalation attempts are not restricted to Pakistan, and that several other countries have also played a role in this regard.

US facing crisis caused by its own mistakes

Commenting on Washington’s contradictory positions on war and diplomacy with Iran, Baqaei said the United States has become confused because it is dealing with circumstances of its own making.

He said Washington has resorted to promoting contradictory narratives in an attempt to evade reality, adding that the US is facing political erosion as a result of its unlawful military action against Iran and the escalation of regional tensions.

According to Baqaei, opposition within the US military structure and growing public fatigue with government policies are signs of the consequences of this approach, while “telling lies” has become part of Washington’s public diplomacy efforts to manage the situation.

US atrocities not limited to Minab, Lamerd

Turning to legal efforts to pursue the vicious US strikes on Iran, Baqaei said Tehran does not need to rely on reports by Western media outlets or experts to establish that the brutalities perpetrated amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity.

He said US attacks on areas including Minab, Lamerd, Qeshm Island, and other parts of Iran constitute war crimes from Tehran’s perspective and should not be reduced to a few high-profile cases while other incidents are overlooked.

The Iranian diplomat added that the attack on the Shajareh Tayyebeh School in the southern city of Minab, due to the high number of children among the casualties, and the Lamerd incident, over the use of prohibited weapons, had received greater attention. However, he stressed that all cases must be documented for possible proceedings in domestic courts and international forums.

US lacks rationale to rally others behind anti-Iran economic war

Baqaei also referred to US efforts to persuade other countries to join its economic pressure campaign against Iran, saying Washington lacks the necessary justification to convince others to support its illegal measures.

He added that only countries vulnerable to coercion may align themselves with the United States, while no country committed to international law, the UN Charter, and humanitarian principles would support Washington’s unlawful actions.

The Foreign Ministry spokesman emphasized that US measures are not directed solely against Iran, but also target fundamental principles such as national sovereignty and independence.

Iran warns Europe against supporting US sanctions

Elsewhere in his remarks, Baqaei censured European support for illegal US sanctions against Iran, saying Europe would be mistaken to believe that making concessions at Iran’s expense would improve its standing with Washington.

He said past experience had shown that submitting to US policies only encouraged Washington to make further demands, urging Europe to learn from the lessons of the past.

Turning to the snapback mechanism, Baqaei said European alignment with the United States had not only failed to produce satisfactory results for Europe, but had also led Washington to exclude the bloc from direct participation in negotiations with Tehran.

He further said that by supporting US sanctions, the European Union had distanced itself from principles such as the rule of law and even abandoned its own regulations, including the “Blocking Statute.”

No nuclear activity at Pickaxe Mountain

The FM spokesman also said Tehran’s communications with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) continues through normal channels, although no new developments have emerged in talks between the two sides.

He categorically dismissed allegations of nuclear activity at Pickaxe Mountain in central Iran, reiterating that Tehran has previously made clear that no atomic activities are being carried out at the site.

Baqaei said politicized statements by some IAEA officials had provided anti-Iran groups with an opportunity to exploit the issue, urging the UN nuclear agency to operate within its statutory mandate and refrain from political involvement.

Iran’s Military Made a Decade of Gains in Just 15 Months: Qalibaf

Iran’s military made a decade of gains in just 15 months: Qalibaf

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf has declared that Iran’s armed forces have not only rebuilt their military capabilities following recent war but have achieved a decade's worth of progress in just 15 months.

In his first direct video address to the Iranian people, Qalibaf assured the nation that the country’s military has emerged stronger and more resilient, driven by indigenous technology and the dedication of its youth.

"In the military arena, contrary to enemy claims, our forces are excellently carrying out the process of rebuilding and strengthening their capabilities," Qalibaf stated. "Whether in rebuilding military equipment or in offensive and defensive arenas, they are advancing in the best possible way. The reason is clear: our technology is indigenous, and the youth of our country are driving the work, without needing to reach out to the enemy."

Asserting that Iran now outpaces its adversaries in reconstruction, Qalibaf warned that any future aggression would be met with overwhelming qualitative and quantitative superiority.

"If I say that in these past 15 months, during which we were almost engaged in two wars, we have made progress and leaps equivalent to a decade, based on the information I have, it is not an exaggeration," he said. "This is the zeal and the blessing of the blood of the martyrs, especially our Martyred Imam."

He pointed to recent engagements, including the 40-day war, as clear evidence of Iran’s evolving air defense and missile capabilities.

"In any future period of war, know that we are more dominant, both in qualitative and quantitative terms, as well as in precision, strikes, and planning."

He also addressed the strategic missile strikes launched against US bases in various countries following the ceasefire and the implementation of the memorandum of understanding (MoU).

"These strikes actually had strategic meanings and led the enemy to the conclusion that they can no longer stop our missiles and our missile firepower."

Absolute control over the Strait of Hormuz

Turning to the Strait of Hormuz, Qalibaf dismissed Western media narratives claiming that the US or its allies control the vital waterway.

He asserted that Iranian forces have complete and definitive control over the strait and will not allow it to be reopened without Iran’s terms.

"We are in a complex, full-scale military war with a powerful enemy," Qalibaf explained. "There have been times when the enemy has had minor successes in passing a few ships, but our military forces are in complete control of the strait and will not allow it to be opened. Whenever they see a move from the enemy, they react with authority and precision."

He mocked the enemy’s attempts to bypass Iranian control, stating, "They are in a defensive position and, despite all their efforts, want to pass a few ships through like thieves and smugglers, which they face our resistance every night."

Iranian Parliament speaker says Iran-China strategic partnership is a win-win cooperation that is rooted in mutual respect.

He also addressed recent clashes in the strait, noting that two Iranian fighters were martyred and several others severely injured. However, he confirmed that Iran delivered a devastating missile response within mere hours.

"The enemy does nothing in its media but lie," Qalibaf said. "If they control the strait, why do they keep repeating every day that the strait is in our hands? If that is the case, why are they worried?"

From 15 demands to a signed MoU

In the diplomatic arena, Qalibaf described the recent memorandum of understanding as a direct translation of Iran’s military and social victories into a political and legal document.

He revealed that the opposing side had initially presented a 15-point draft demanding that Iran abandon its nuclear and missile programs, with no mention of the resistance.

"Today, when you look at these 14 points, you see that they have retreated from all of them," Qalibaf emphasized. "Our resistance and our military arena forced the enemy to retreat, to the point where the President of the United States had to sign this document."

He stressed that just as the signing of the MoU was important, its implementation is equally critical. Acknowledging the historical untrustworthiness of the US, Qalibaf stated that Iran approached the negotiations with pessimism but successfully imposed its rightful demands through the logic of power.

"We will never surrender politically or militarily," he declared.

Furthermore, he highlighted a significant diplomatic achievement with Oman regarding the management of the Strait of Hormuz.

"Based on all international laws and the MoU, the strait must be managed by the coastal countries, which here are Oman and Iran," he said, confirming that the agreement has been reached and will be executed under Iranian management and control, ensuring that third-party countries have no right to interfere.

Warning against hybrid war

Qalibaf warned that having failed in the military and diplomatic arenas, the enemy has now escalated to a hybrid war, heavily utilizing economic pressure, complex psychological operations, and the threat of short, targeted military strikes or assassinations to incite internal unrest.

He dismissed recent threats by the US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent regarding economic sanctions, comparing the situation to the Persian proverb "a mountain giving birth to a mouse," indicating that the enemy's economic threats amount to much ado about nothing.

However, he issued a stern warning regarding the enemy’s naval blockade. "A naval blockade is certainly considered a military action under international law, and we will certainly respond to it appropriately," Qalibaf said.

Iran’s Ghalibaf ridicules US vow to impose the most crushing sanctions ever on the country.

"If they want to escalate the blockade, we will no longer wait, and we will certainly take the action that must be taken. We will respond to the naval blockade, which is one of the worst types of military war, militarily."

Concluding his address, Qalibaf called for national unity and vigilance, urging the public and officials not to fall into the enemy’s traps.

"Our people have always been at the forefront and pioneers in all these scenes," he said. "With the planning that has been done and with the cooperation of you, our dear people, we will, God willing, pass through this difficult war as well."

Iran Vows 'Crushing' Retaliation Following Latest US Airstrikes on Southern Provinces

Tuesday, 01 September 2026 6:33 PM

Logo of General Staff of Iran's Armed Forces.

Iran's armed forces have vowed to deliver "crushing and devastating" blows to the United States following a new wave of American airstrikes targeting military positions in the southern provinces of Sistan and Baluchestan and Hormozgan.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces issued the warning on Tuesday, declaring that the terrorist US Army will face severe consequences for its latest acts of aggression.

"In response to the aerial aggression by the US Army against points in Sistan and Baluchestan and Hormozgan, the armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran will inflict crushing and devastating blows upon the vile and evil American enemy," the military command stated in an official release.

The statement emphasized that the more Washington insists on its "malicious behavior" in the region, the heavier the losses it will be forced to bear.

"We have repeatedly declared and [shown in action] that under no circumstances will we compromise the rights of the heroic Iranian nation, and we will impose heavy costs on the American enemy," the command added.

Separately, IRGC Spokesperson Brigadier General Hossein Mohebbi warned that "severe punishment awaits the aggressors" and that America will deeply regret launching the new attacks.

Iran has formally demanded that the UN Security Council act after a US military strike on Larak Island in the Persian Gulf.

The reactions follow a fresh series of US acts of aggression, which hit the counties of Chabahar and Konarak in Sistan and Baluchestan, among other areas.

The terrorist US Central Command (CENTCOM) claimed in a statement that it launched airstrikes in retaliation for what it termed attempts by Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps to deploy sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz and a missile barrage directed at a US military base in Jordan.

This latest flare-up comes just days after the US conducted strikes on the Iranian island of Larak in the Strait of Hormuz, which Washington claimed was aimed at preventing Tehran from planting mines.

In response, Iran launched missile and drone attacks targeting US forces stationed in Jordan and the United Arab Emirates.

The Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy chokepoint, has remained largely closed to normal commercial traffic since the outbreak of the war on Iran in late February.

US Army Secretary Quits Amid Hegseth's Wartime Purges

The United States military is facing a severe leadership crisis as Army Secretary Dan Driscoll submitted his resignation, amid War Secretary Pete Hegseth’s internal purges.

The high-profile departure comes as the US enters the seventh month of its costly war on Iran, leaving the Army effectively without permanent civilian or uniformed leadership at a critical juncture.

The White House confirmed Driscoll’s resignation on Monday.

While the administration attempted to project an image of strength, behind the scenes, the departure is the culmination of months of bitter infighting between Driscoll and Hegseth.

According to a Reuters report citing sources familiar with the matter, Driscoll grew increasingly frustrated with Hegseth’s obstruction of Army transformation and readiness efforts, specifically the War Secretary's practice of firing the very generals responsible for executing modernization strategies.

The leadership vacuum is particularly acute given the ongoing US military entanglement in West Asia.

With tens of thousands of US soldiers deployed in a seven-month war against Iran that has yielded no victory and severely depleted US munitions stockpiles, the Army is now operating without a permanent civilian secretary or a uniformed chief.

Hegseth abruptly fired Army Chief of Staff General Randy George in April and has failed to nominate a permanent successor.

Driscoll reportedly viewed this move as a dangerous decapitation of military command during an active war, a frustration that deepened when Hegseth also pushed out the head of US Army forces in Europe and personally blocked the promotions of other senior officers.

Many US lawmakers have branded Donald Trump’s six-month military campaign against Iran a “complete failure.”

Driscoll, an Army veteran who served in Iraq, had been shielded from Hegseth’s purge largely due to his close personal ties with US Vice President JD Vance.

However, officials note that Hegseth viewed Driscoll as a bureaucratic threat and had long sought his removal.

The exodus at the top of the Army appears to be widening, with reports indicating that Dave Fitzgerald, the deputy undersecretary of the Army focused on innovation, is also expected to resign.

Military observers and domestic critics have argued that the Pentagon is being hollowed out from within by political ideologues.

Senator Jack Reed, the top Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee, bluntly stated that Hegseth is inflicting "lasting harm" on the Department of War, noting that the constant churn of leadership is severely damaging military cohesion.
