Veteran Freedom Rider, SNCC Organizer, John Hardy to Speak at MECAWI/Moratorium NOW! Coalition Weekly Meeting

The Michigan Emergency Committee Against War & Injustice (MECAWI) and the Moratorium NOW! Coalition to Stop Foreclosures, Evictions and Utility Shut-offs will hold its regular weekly meeting this Monday, February 6 from 7:00-9:00pm. This week's meeting will honor African American History Month with a talk and powerpoint presentation from John Hardy, a Detroit resident who was a leading figure in the Freedom Rides of 1961 and an organizer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) between 1960-63.

SNCC was the vanguard organization of the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Its organizers took over coordination of the Freedom Rides in May 1961 after the bombing of the Greyhound bus in Anniston, Alabama on Mother's Day that year. Hardy worked with SNCC in tearing down legalized segregation and winning the right to universal suffrage.

Please join us this coming Monday beginning at 7:00pm for this exciting and historically significant meeting. There will also be reports on the ongoing work of MECAWI and Moratorium NOW! related to the struggles against foreclosures and evictions, the need for a moratorium on evictions and the efforts to end all U.S. wars of aggression and occupation.

This event will be held at the MECAWI/Moratorium NOW! offices located at 5920 Second Ave. near Antoinette, just north of the Wayne State University campus.
