United States Senate members have again failed to pass a bill to extend jobless benefits to the long-term unemployed. The jobless figures released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) indicates clearly that millions are suffering throughout the country.

President Omar Hassan al-Bashir, leader of the Republic of Sudan, has denied a visa to a special U.S. envoy to Sudan. Relations between the Republic of Sudan and Washington has been strained over two decades.

In the Republic of South Sudan the government of President Salva Kiir has defended the intervention of neighboring Uganda in the internal conflict within the ruling Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A) which has been taking place since Dec. 15. A ceasefire agreement was recently signed although reports of defections and clashes are continuing.

The controversy surrounding the remittances of Somalian expatriates to the homeland is continuing. Many people within Somalia are dependent upon these funds in light of the ongoing war inside the Horn of Africa.
