JOHANNESBURG - One of President Jacob Zuma’s bodyguards was shot and killed in what the Hawks believe was a hit.

Hawks spokesperson Robert Netshiunda told eNCA.com they are looking for several suspects as they believe the killer probably acted on an order or request from another person.

He said Sergeant N J Magwaza, who had been stationed at the president's Nkandla homestead, was asleep in his rondawel in eNtumeni in Eshowe, KwaZulu-Natal when it was set alight.

A neighbour who saw the fire at around 01:00am Sunday morning called on other neighbours to help.

After Magwaza was removed from his burning house he called his family to tell them about his narrow escape, when the sound of gunshots reverberated through the night.

Netshiunda said the guard made every attempt to elude the danger but his lifeless body was eventually found underneath his car after the shots were heard.

eNtumeni is the same municipality in which one of Premier Senzo Mchunu’s bodyguards, Xolani Nkosi - had been shot and killed in July.

‘We cannot rule out and we can’t confirm if the two incidents are linked at this stage but we are investigating all angles,' Ntshiunda told eNCA.com.

He also said that the motive for the attack is not known at this stage.

The killer escaped with Magwaza’s service pistol.
