Marian Anderson (1897-1993) was a pioneering opera singer, the first African-American to perform at the Metropolitan Opera as regular company member in 1955. In February of 2008 her life will be commemorated in Philadelphia.

Marian Anderson's residence was designated a historic site in 2004 by the Philadelphia Historical Commission. The property was purchased by Miss Anderson in 1924.
Blanche Burton Lyles, Founder of the Marian Anderson Historical Society, describes the birthday celebration: "The home of Marian Anderson will be filled with festive activities featuring a Mardi Gras glare, with music from Marian Anderson's repertoire and performances by Marian Anderson Scholar-Artists, welcome greetings from special guests including City and State officials, libations and more. We invite students and the community to learn more about Philadelphia's "treasure" and the Marian Anderson Heritage Village."
