MECAWI & MCHR Co-Sponsor March/Rally to Demand an End to the Five Year Occupation of Iraq
DETROIT --In an effort to demand justice and equality around the world, the Michigan Emergency Committee Against War & Injustice (MECAWI) will hold a “Demonstration Against the War at Home and Abroad” on the 5th anniversary of the Iraq war on Saturday, March 15, 2007 at noon.
“The United States’ plans for global domination are being met by worldwide resistance,” says MECAWI. “The occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan are a military disaster. Bush and company are threatening a new war with Iran because it refuses to bend its knee to Washington and Wall Street. While at the same time Israel, armed and directed by the United States, rains down death and destruction upon the Palestinians. It is up to us to make change happen.”
Organizers of the march and rally aim to raise awareness of the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the continued occupation of Palestine and the siege of Gaza. MECAWI is also demanding that the U.S. get their hands off of Iran.
Demonstrators are asked to gather at the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center at noon and will then march to an indoor rally at the Central United Methodist Church.

NEWS MIDDLE EAST
ReplyDeleteIraq hit by further violence
A roadside blast in southern Iraq has blown apart a civil passenger bus leaving at least 16 people dead and 22 more injured.
The bus was traveling from Basra to Nasiriyah, when the blast took place just 80 km south from the town of Nasiriyah.
According to the Iraqi police, five women and three children were among those killed.
Tuesday's blast comes just a day after the killing of five American soldiers in Baghdad, who were targeted by a suicide bomber.
More attacks
In a separate incident during the day, at least eight people were killed when a suicide bomber rammed his explosives-laden car into a checkpoint manned by Iraqi soldiers and a local group.
Colonel Mohammed Khalid, the local police officer said: "The suicide attack took place in Dhuluiya, 70 km from north of Baghdad, in Salaheddin province, at around 3:15pm (1215 GMT)."
US bases are now located inside Iraqi neighbourhood and more US soldiers are getting out of their armoured vehicles to patrol Baghdad on foot, as a part of the military's strategy.
While the face-to-face contact builds goodwill, it also gives suicide bombers, who slip by vehicle security checkpoints simply by walking, a better access to striking soldiers.
