GRENADA TO BUILD MONUMENT FOR CUBANS KILLED DURING 1983 US INVASION

St George's, Grenada: A monument is to be constructed here in memory of 24 Cuban construction workers who died during the United States (US) invasion in 1983, a senior government minister has announced.
Foreign Affairs Minister Peter David said that the Government was in the process of identifying a suitable location for the memorial.
"We cannot forget the Cubans who died in the invasion. They were making a contribution towards the development of this country and it's time we recognise their contribution with an appropriate monument," David said.
At the time of the invasion hundreds of Cubans were in Grenada working on a new international airport as well as other projects.
Cuba's Ambassador to Grenada, Margarita Delgado, said that most of the funding for the monument would come from the Government of Cuba.
"Our hope is that the monument will be located somewhere close to the (Point Salines International) airport because it was within that area that most of them died," Delgado said.
October 25 will mark 25 years since the invasion.
The US Government has already erected a monument to recognise the 19 American soldiers who died during the operation.
