Luanda – The former president of Namibia, Dr Sam Nujoma, has expressed to Angolan head of State, José Eduardo dos Santos, his deepest gratitude for the contribution of Angola to the independence of his country, Angop learnt.
Dr Nujoma expressed this during an audience president José Eduardo dos Santos granted to him in Luanda.
Speaking at the end of the meeting, he said he expressed to president José Eduardo dos Santos his gratitude for the diplomatic and material support for the cause of the independence and liberation of Namibia.
He said that now that the two countries are politically free and there is political freedom, they can work together, conducting several tasks, including scientific research, and explore existing resources to the benefit of the two peoples.
Nujoma is in Angola to attend the third meeting of solidarity with Cuba held over the weekend.
Nujoma also said the first Angolan President, António Agostinho Neto, was one of the greatest nationalists of the African contemporary history.
Nujoma said he knew President Neto well, whom he considers a historical revolutionary, who not only defended Angola's independence, but also gave support to the independence of the African continent.
He mentioned the fact that when Angolan won its independence on November 11, 1975, Namibia and South Africa were not yet free and that Angola, under the leadership of MPLA, had a motto, from Cabinda to Cunene, Namibia and South Africa total liberation.
Nujoma also said the independence of Angola would not have a meaning without the total liberation of Namibia and South Africa, the reason why President António Agostinho Neto invited him to come to Angola.
From that time, he explained, all soldiers of the Swapo (Namibian nationalist movement) left Zambia and came to Angola from where they launched the war of liberation and also built military barracks.
Nujoma revealed that when President Neto held his first tour to the regions of Lubango, Menongue and Namibe, shortly after the independence of Angola, he was part of the entourage and during the tour the two discussed a lot of issues. -Angop
