Despite a host of political woes and elections in less than two weeks, the Obama administration says it is making Sudan a priority.
Administration officials said in a briefing Friday that the White House is holding at least three meetings a week on Sudan as it tries to avoid a new outbreak of violence. Sudan is just 79 days away from a promised referendum that could split the country in two.
A senior foreign policy adviser to President Barack Obama, Samantha Power, says the president is also getting daily briefings on the situation that many fear could precipitate a new war.
Power said: "This is a rare case in which, the United States and other international players are teaming up to shine a spotlight on events on the ground proactively ahead of an event."
