In cables published by whistleblower site Wikileaks, Egypt fears an independent south Sudan will threaten its stranglehold on the River Nile waters. According to Wikileaks, Egypt had even asked the US government to help postpone next month’s referendum by four to six years.
The period proposed by the North African state would have been enough to deal with water security in the Nile Co-operative Framework Agreement approved by five states.
The position is radically divergent from that of Inter-governmental Authority on Development (Igad), which has been pushing the Sudan parties to adhere to the Comprehensive Peace Agreement and hold the referendum next year as scheduled.
In the cable, Egypt’s intelligence has also stressed the desire for a united Sudan and cessation of hostilities with neighbouring Chad. The BBC reported that the foreign ministry
