WASHINGTON, Jan. 7 — The U.S. Treasury Department announced on Thursday that the United States will impose financial sanctions on Cote d'Ivoire's Laurent Gbagbo, his wife and his supporters.

The Treasury Department said in a statement that the financial sanctions targeted Laurent Gbagbo, his wife, Simone Gbagbo, and three of Gbagbo's close associates.

The sanctions will block all property of the designated persons subject to U.S. jurisdiction and will prohibit all U.S. persons from engaging in any transactions with them, said the statement.

Cote d'Ivoire has been in political crisis after both Laurent Gbagbo and opposition leader Alassane Ouattara both claimed victory in the presidential run-off on Nov. 28.

The UN mission in the restive country said on Thursday that at least 210 people had been killed in clashes in Cote d'Ivoire since mid-December last year, according to media. (PNA/Xinhua)
