African Renaissance Party: "It is improper to recognize a group whose aim is to murder Nigerian citizens."

The Nigerian African Renaissance Party (ARP) on Tuesday urged the Federal Government (FG) to withdraw its recognition for the Libyan rebels' National Transitional Council (NTC).

ARP National Chairman, Alhaji Yahaya Ndu, told the News Agency of Nigeria that it was improper to recognize a group whose aim is to murder Nigerian citizens.

"The FG should take stock of all Nigerians, including other blacks, who have been murdered in Libya and a census of other black Africans, especially Nigerians who are still in Libya. The FG must also sound a note of warning to Libya that it would not take it lightly if anything happened to its citizens again," Ndu said.

The ARP leader expressed sadness at the reckless killings of Nigerians in the North African country.

"Nigeria must intervene and stop the killing of its citizens by the rebels," he said. "The government should do everything possible to rescue its citizens and other Africans in Libya."

Ndu's remarks came after Foreign Minister Olugbenga Ashiru on Sunday received distress calls from Nigerians who live in Libya, including from their coordinator Mr Daramola Siji, who reported about outright killings, rape and extortion of money from Africans who have taken refuge in camps.

In a reaction on those calls, said: “The government wishes to note with concern reports of incessant abuse of helpless civilians in Libya by some unscrupulous elements who continue to take undue advantage of the ongoing crisis in that country, particularly to carry out attacks on black migrant workers and other black Africans."

He added that "these extra-judicial killings certainly run contrary to Nigeria’s call for good governance by the National Transitional Council."

The killing of Nigerians in Libya was also condemned on Sunday by a member of Nigeria's House of Representatives, Mrs Hon Abike Dabiri-Erewa. She called on the government to mount pressure on the Libyan rebels’ National Transitional Council to stop the ongoing genocide against blacks in the country.

Earlier former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo already denounced NATO's attack on Libya and Libyan leader Gaddafi.
