United States police have arrested ten Occupy protesters in an early morning raid on their encampment in downtown Buffalo, the second most populous city of the state of New York.
Buffalo media reported that police officers, including SWAT (special weapons and tactics) team members, moved in around 2:00 a.m. on Thursday and arrested 10 demonstrators in Niagara Square near city hall.
The Occupy Buffalo protesters have been camping in the downtown area of the city for four months.
In late December, Buffalo police attacked another protest site near Lafayette Square. Occupy encampments have also been shut down by police in other New York state cities of Albany and Syracuse.
There have been more than 5,800 arrests during Occupy protests in tens of cities across the US up to December 31, 2011, according to the website occupy-arrests.com.
The Occupy movement emerged after a group of demonstrators gathered in New York's financial district on September 17, 2011 to protest against the unjust distribution of wealth in the country, unemployment and the excessive influence of big corporations on American policies.
Despite the police crackdown and mass arrests, the Occupy movement, which grew out of the Occupy Wall Street movement, spread to many major US cities.
