The Human Rights Watch (HRW) says Kenyan defense and security forces have abused ethnic Somali refugees in Kenya’s northeast border region, Press TV reports.

In a report released on Friday, the rights group held Kenyan forces accountable for violation of human rights, including physical mistreatment, deliberate humiliation, rape, beatings, arbitrary detention and destruction of property in Somali refugee camps on the Kenyan border.

According to the report, the violations were conducted in Kenya’s northeastern frontier towns and Dadaab refugee camp, which witnessed the most serious abuses by security forces.

In a particular incident, the police carried out an orchestrated raid on refugees, raping women and beating children as little as four years old.

“We saw that people were being grabbed from the street outside, brought into the military camp. It’s in an open field and you could see that people being forced to run in the mud and they were being forced to frog jump across the field and stand on one arm and one leg and do strange acrobatic exercises," human rights researcher, Neela Ghoshal told reporters.

HRW says little or no action has been taken to address the alleged abuses by the Kenyan police forces.

“What we would really like to call for is for an independent inquiry into the abuses in all of these places Dadaab, … and that officers responsible for this be identified and held accountable,” she said.
