Sudan seeks Arab League support

KHARTOUM, Sudan, May 23 (UPI) -- The Sudanese government hopes to rally support of the Arab League on sovereignty issues with South Sudan at a ministerial meeting next month, officials said.
Sudan Foreign Minister Ali Ahmed Karti, who attended a March 28 Arab League meeting in Baghdad, decided to convene a special meeting with all Arab League member states to discuss the economic and political crisis, the Sudan Tribune said Tuesday.
Arab League Secretary General Nabil al-Arabi was in Khartoum Sunday for talks with President Omar Hassan al-Bashir discussing preparations for the June 5 meeting, the newspaper said.
Sudan Foreign Minister Ali Ahmed Karti said at a news conference Sunday that Sudan has the full support of the Arab league and praised its stance over the Heglig region seizure by the South Sudanese army.
Following a dispute over oil revenues with Khartoum, the South Sudanese army occupied Heglig's oilfield in April, violating Sudanese sovereignty.
