A US assassination drone strike has killed eight people and injured several others in the northwestern Pakistan tribal region near the Afghan border.

The attack took place in the Hassokhel town, 25 kilometers east of Miranshah, the main town of the North Waziristan area early on Monday, an Urdu-language Pakistani TV channel, Dunya News reported.

A Pakistani security official said US drones had fired four more missiles at a compound in the town. He added that the exact number of the drones that participated in the airstrike was not immediately known.

Some local media reports said five drones were still hovering over the area, creating panic among the people in the tribal region.

Monday’s airstrike was the third such attack in the last four days in North Waziristan.

Washington claims that its airstrikes target militants crossing the border with Afghanistan, but local sources say civilians have been the main victims of the attacks.

Pakistanis have held many demonstrations to condemn the United States violations of their sovereignty.

On January 31, US President Barack Obama confirmed that the United States was using the drones to carry out strikes against the tribal belt.

He said “a lot of these strikes have been in the FATA” -- Pakistan's Federally Administered Tribal Areas, the official name for the tribal region.
