PRAYERS play a pivotal role in main­taining peace and stability, the First Lady Amai Grace Mugabe has said. In a speech read on her behalf by Women, Gender and Community Development Minister Olivia Muchena to mark the World Prayer Day Silver Jubilee Celebrations in Harare yester­day, Amai Mugabe urged the nation to maintain peace in the country.

She urged people to co-exist and tol­erate each other.

The celebrations were held under the theme “Pray without Ceasing” and were attended by women from various denominations across the country.

“This is an important day to us as we celebrate the World Prayer Day Sil­ver Jubilee in Zimbabwe.

“Some people do not realise the importance of prayers in our country. The peace and stability that we are enjoying in the country are attributa­ble to the prayers by the women of Zim­babwe.

“Prayers change our lives and such power should not be under esti­mated,” she said.

Amai Mugabe urged people to respect and praise God for them to receive more blessings.

WPD chairperson for Greater Harare province Ms Shumirai Ndav­eni said it was important to pray to overcome challenges in life.

With God, said Ms Ndaveni, noth­ing was impossible.

“We are happy that we have attained 50 years of praying in Zimbabwe. It is important to put God first in every­thing that we do,” she said.

Ms Ndaveni said they prayed for their prosperity and the nation at large.

She said they wanted to be recog­nised in all national issues such as empowerment programmes that are taking place in the country.

“We pray to overcome challenges in life and for us to be able to do our own things. We also want to be empowered as women,” said Ms Ndaveni.

She said they had invited delegates from the region to be part of the Silver Jubilee celebrations.

Regional delegates who attended the celebrations came from South Africa, Ghana, Angola, Zambia and Botswana.

Also present at the celebrations were Deputy Priminister Thokozani Khupe and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s wife Ms Elizabeth Macheka.
