West not interested in resolving Syria crisis: Iran envoy

Iranian Ambassador to Lebanon Ghazanfar Roknabadi says Western countries are not interested in resolving the ongoing crisis in Syria.

Roknabadi also said that “The majority of Syrians want reforms to be implemented by the country’s President Bashar al-Assad.”

Damascus says that the chaos in Syria is being orchestrated from outside, and there are reports that a very large number of the militants in the country are foreign nationals.

The Iranian ambassador added that the Syrian people “inside the country” are the representatives of Syria.

Many people, including large numbers of security forces, have been killed in the turmoil that began in Syria in March 2011.

On December 16, Iran unveiled the details of a six-point plan to resolve the crisis in Syria. The plan calls for an immediate end to the violence, and urges the Syrian government and the representatives of all Syrian groups regardless of their political and social tendencies to hold talks in order to form a national reconciliation committee.

The plan also calls for the dispatch of humanitarian aid to Syrians following the end of all conflicts, the lifting of all economic sanctions imposed against the country, and the facilitation of the return of displaced Syrians to their homes.

Roknabadi said Iran’s six-point plan stresses the importance of dialogue, holding a fair election and respecting the choice of the Syrian people.

Referring to the first round of talks regarding the Syrian crisis in Tehran, Roknabadi said the next round of meetings would be held in the Syrian capital, Damascus.
