The Government is expected to soon import 150 000 metric tonnes of maize from Zambia
following indications that the country might face a food deficit owing to erratic rainfall, President Mugabe has said.
Speaking at the inauguration of Mr Johannes Jenami as Chief Chidziva in Banket yesterday, the Head of State and Government and Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces said the two countries struck the deal after he discussed the matter with his Zambian counterpart, President Michael Sata.
He said the grain would be moved under a government-to-government arrangement, adding that Finance Minister Mr Tendai Biti’s efforts to incorporate private companies into the agreement would only threaten the imports. “We have been in touch with Zambian President Mr Sata over the issue and Zambia has agreed to export maize to Zimbabwe, but, only on a government-to-government basis,” he said.
Cde Mugabe urged Zimbabweans to vote wisely in the forthcoming harmonised elections. He said Zanu-PF is the only party keen to improve livelihoods through its empowerment programmes. He also warned land reform beneficiaries against leasing their properties. Turning to traditional leadership, the President implored members of the Gushungo clan of Zvimba to remain united.
Fertiliser firms appeal for energy subsidy
The clan has a legitimate claim to the throne of the Zvimba, Chidziva and Beperere chieftainship.
President Mugabe said the chieftainship was created after it emerged that about 84 percent of Zvimba did not fall under the jurisdiction of a traditional realm leader.
