33rd Anniversary of the Kwagju Massacre in South Korea

Rodong Sinmun Terms Kwangju Massacre Fascist Violence

Pyongyang, May 21 (KCNA) -- Military hooligans turned Kwangju of south Korea into a "bathtub of blood" in May, 33 years ago. This was an extreme fascist action which quenched the people's desire for democracy by the most atrocious and brutal method.

Rodong Sinmun Tuesday says this in a bylined article.

It goes on:
After holding the real power of the south Korean puppet military through the "army purge coup" on December 12, 1979, the military gangsters hatched plots to seize power. Finally in May the next year they openly moved to hold control of the regime.

Under the situation where the struggle for democracy against fascism rapidly mounted among the broad range of people, the "yusin" remnants carried out bloody coup to revive the "yusin system" and intensify the military fascist rule. They were on the verge of collapse in the face of the worsened contradiction and conflict among the inside rulers.

The military hooligans made no scruple of committing indiscriminate massacre against the Kwangju people who offered resistance.

It was none other than the U.S. which manipulated the south Korean troops from the backstage to mercilessly quell the south Koreans' desire for democracy.

Even today the people's desire for democracy and human rights are being mercilessly violated in south Korea.

History and the situation refresh a bitter lesson that the democratic development of society and human rights can never be guaranteed as long as the U.S. colonial system to dominate south Korea goes on and the traitorous ruling forces who quench the desire and demand of the people as the stooge of foreign forces are allowed to take power.

S. Korean Workers Stage Mass Actions in Kwangju

Pyongyang, May 21 (KCNA) -- Workers from across south Korea staged mass actions in Kwangju on May 17 on the occasion of the 33rd anniversary of the May 18 Kwangju Popular Uprising.

Representatives of the industrial trade unions and regional headquarters under the south Korean Confederation of Trade Unions and workers affiliated to those organizations staged a sit-in strike in front of the Mangwoldong Cemetery in protest against the puppet regime defaming the Kwangju Popular Uprising.

They accused the present regime of distorting the essence of the uprising and quelling the desire of the uprisers as the Lee Myung Bak regime did.

They assailed the regime for instructing the decoration agency, in particular, to pressurize people not to sing a song reflecting the spirit of the uprisers at an event commemorating the anniversary and unhesitatingly taking an action to write off the uprising in Kwangju in history.

Then they held a rally at the plaza of Kwangju Railway Station.

They chanted slogans "Let's drive out Yankees, backstage wirepuller of the massacre in May!", "No war, No GIs, Let's Achieve Peace on the Korean Peninsula!"
Ryang Song Yun, chairman of the Interim Emergency Measure Committee of the Confederation of Trade Unions, in his address referred to the significance of the May popular resistance staged to achieve democracy of society in defiance of the military fascist forces.

He called upon the workers and all other people to turn out in the struggle to defend independence and democracy of society and peace against the regime yielding to the U.S. and encroaching upon the people's interests, the era of bringing dictatorship and the threat of war to exterminate the nation.

Pak Pong Ju, chief of the Kwangju Regional Headquarters of the confederation, Kim Jae Ha, chief of the Pusan Regional Headquarters of the confederation, and Ri Kwang Sok, chairman of the Federation of Peasants Associations, laid bare the real intention of the U.S. which was brought to light through its brutal killing of uprisers.

A resolution was read out at the rally.

It called for staging actions to have part-time jobs abolished, win the vital rights, terminate dictatorship and achieve peace against the U.S. and war through the concerted efforts of the workers by inheriting the spirit of the martyrs who laid down their lives in the bloody resistance.

A memorial service took place at the Mangwoldong Cemetery on that evening.

Ultra-Right Conservative Forces Accused of Insulting Participants in Kwangju Popular Uprising

Pyongyang, May 21 (KCNA) -- The right-wing conservative forces in south Korea have committed a series of reckless acts of distorting and defaming the essence of the May 18 Kwangju Popular Uprising, sparking off indignation among people of various social strata, according to the south Korean Kyunghyang Daily News on May 17.

The students' council of the literary college in Korea University of south Korea opened a photo exhibition outside the building of the university on May 15 to introduce the struggle of the participants in the Kwangju Popular Uprising.

That night unidentified hooligans committed such rowdyism as besmirching photos there before posting a leaflet terming the uprising "a rebellion" and a photo of traitor Chun Doo Hwan who commanded the massacre in Kwangju.

Not content with this, they openly posted their vandalism on an internet website and did not hesitate to brand the sponsors of the photo exhibition as "left-wing forces".

On May 7 the side of Songsin Women's University removed a wall-paper displayed by its students on the occasion of the 33rd anniversary of the uprising under the pretext that it failed to get any "prior permission."

Students formally applied for displaying the wall paper, but the university side turned it down for the mere reason that it dealt in detail with the actions of the uprisers.

The ultra-right conservative forces have become more reckless in their acts of defaming the actions of the south Korean people for independence, democracy and reunification under the rule of the daughter of the "yusin" dictator.
