Somalia: Mogadishu roads blocked on the second day

MOGADISHU (RBC) residents in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu face blocked roads in the second day amid heavy security operations, RBC Radio reports.
Hundreds of Somalia government security forces were deployed into the city’s main roads blocking the movement of the vehicles including the public buses which led thousands on people to use their feet to reach universities or business places in the capital.
The operation which started on Tuesday continued until Wednesday on May 1st as there were no celebrations to mark the International Workers’ Day today. The main roads were blocked by armed police and members of the national security agency.
The national security and interior minister Abdikarim Hussein Guled said the operations aimed to prevent possible terrorist attacks in the capital.
“There are no imminent threats now, but we aim to tighten the security as usually we do.”
He told reporters in a press conference in Mogadishu today.
According to security sources the operations in the capital begun after intelligence information signaled that Al Shabab group may target government buildings on revenge for the death of its former commander Adan Hashi Eyrow who was killed in U.S airstrike in central Somalia on May 1st 2008.
RBC Radio reporter says the security forces apprehended dozens of people on Tuesday night following heavy search operation on the eastern parts of the capital.
