A military coup was carried out by the Egyptian military against the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) government of President Mohamed Morsi. The coup came amid growing unrest within the country where millions had taken to the streets demanding the president's ouster.
The army in Egypt and its supporters in this action are trying to label what happened as being other than a coup. Yet the defense forces, like in February 2011, is acting based upon its own class interests wanting to preserve the Egyptian dependence upon the United States for its political survival.
This interview brings out that the economic crisis in Egypt is worsening and that the U.S. is only concerned about keeping Egypt within the imperialist camp. Egypt's separate peace treaty with Israel remains intact despite the removal of Mubarak over two years ago.
Morsi's line on Syria and his war provocation against Ethiopia was still not enough to shield him and the Muslim Brotherhood from being deposed. Egypt must break with imperialism to chart an independent path towards national reconciliation and development.
