The recent deadly attack on a shopping center in Nairobi, Kenya is the result of “failed US foreign policy” in East Africa, a political commentator from Detroit said on Tuesday.

Three of the gunmen behind the attack were from the United States, according to CNN, which reported earlier that the American-linked “militants” from a Somali-based group al-Shabab were among the terrorists, who carried out the attack on Sunday killing dozens of people.

“I think it (the attack) is mainly do to the failure of US foreign policy, particularly in Somalia,” Abayomi Azikiwe, editor of the Pan-African News Wire, told Press TV.

The troops occupying Somalia receive subsidies, equipment, training, and logistical support from the Pentagon, Azikiwe noted. “So this is a serious problem as far as the United States is concerned because they are perceived as being involved in this conflict.”

The Somali-based al-Shabab organization has demanded that Kenya and other US-backed foreign forces in Somalia withdraw from their country.

“The United States has been involved there now for many decades. The country was occupied during the early 1990’s by 12,000 US Marines as well as United Nation forces, and that turned out to be a complete disaster,” Azikiwe said.

The United States is trying to impose their political system on Somalia, and therefore that impacts Somali’s foreign relations with other countries, particular with Kenya and Ethiopia, he added.
