A senior Iranian military commander has warned against any US military intervention in Syria, stating that such an action will further incite anti-American sentiments among Muslims worldwide.

“We are on the threshold of a strategic turning point regarding the fate of this region and more generally [the future of] the Muslim world,” the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC)’s second-in-command, Brigadier General Hossein Salami, said on Tuesday.

“What we are witnessing now is the outcome of the repeated losses that the US and its Western and regional allies have incurred…over the past three decades,” the general added.

Salami noted that the United States, the Israeli regime and their regional allies have failed to reach their long-term objectives in the Middle East despite utilization of all their strategies.

“These defeats have led the United States to try to penetrate in the center of gravity of the [anti-Israeli] Islamic resistance front, which is Syria,” he said.

Salami cautioned US and Western policymakers and security advisors that war on Syria will be “a very dangerous game”, stressing that there is no military solution to the Syrian conflict and that Israel must reconsider its security strategies.

On August 31, US President Barack Obama said that he had decided to launch a military attack against Syria for its alleged use of chemical weapons and now seeks congressional consent for the move. Lawmakers will debate the issue upon return from recess on September 9.

Damascus has vehemently denied the accusations, saying the chemical attack was carried out by the militants themselves as a black operation.
