The United States is after natural resources in Africa, says Abayomi Azikiwe, the Detroit-based editor of Pan-African News Wire, as the Pentagon is boosting influence in the continent.
In a phone interview with Press TV, Azikiwe said “the escalating intervention of the Pentagon in Africa” is aimed at attaining resources like oil, natural gas, and other strategic minerals such as gold, diamonds, uranium, platinum, etc.
The United States has “a full-scaled military base” in the African continent including Camp Lemonnier, located in horn of Africa in Djibouti, he said.
Camp Lemonnier is the place where the Pentagon is expanding its activities the most. It has been the Pentagon’s main facility in the continent for nearly 10 years now. It currently houses approximately 4,000 US military personnel and civilian contractors.
Reports say the US is increasing investments in air facilities, flight services, telecommunications and electrical upgrades in the African continent.
According to unclassified federal documents, cited by the Tribune Washington Bureau, hundreds of millions of dollars are now flowing into Africa to start and develop different projects.
The projects are part of $1.2 billion in planned improvements over the next 25 years that will accelerate the camp’s transformation from a makeshift installation into an enduring 600-acre base, according to the Times.
