Congolese Envoy Presents Credentials In Zimbabwe

The Republic of Congo’s new Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Mr Leonard Emile Ognimba, yesterday presented his credentials to President Mugabe at State House in Harare and pledged to enhance bilateral ties between Harare and Brazzaville. Ambassador Ognimba will be based in Pretoria, South Africa.
Speaking to journalists after presenting his credentials, Ambassador Ognimba said Harare and Brazzaville enjoyed cordial political relations.
“I was sent by President (Denis) Sassou Nguesso here to convey his greetings and best wishes to the freedom fighter, President Mugabe,” he said.
Ambassador Ognimba went on: “We have good political relations and we are trying to put economic relations to the level of political relations. So we have to strengthen and consolidate our economic partnership.”
He said there was scope for greater co-operation in mining and agriculture.
Ambassador Ognimba is a career diplomat who has been Congo’s chief diplomat in South Africa since October 2012.
Before coming to Zimbabwe, Ambassador Ognimba was director for policy affairs at the African Union Commission.
From 2002 to 2004, he served as a member of the Organisation of African Union Transition (to the African Union) planning support team. He also served as head of the Humanitarian Affairs, Refugees and Displaced Persons division, and Secretary to the OAU Commission on Refugees from 2000 to 2002. In 1997, Ambassador Ognimba served in the OAU Mission in Burundi as political advisor.
He also served as assistant diplomatic advisor in the Office of the President.
President Sassou Nguesso is expected to open the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair in Bulawayo next month.
