An American political analyst says criminal charges filed by the US Department of Justice against Chinese military officials are “politically motivated.”

On Monday, the Justice Department filed criminal charges against five members of the Chinese military, accusing them of using military capabilities and technology to target American private businesses. It is the first time the United States is taking legal action against a foreign country over cyber attacks.

US Attorney General Eric Holder said he hopes the Chinese government respects the Washington-Beijing relationship enough to hand over the defendants to face justice in the US. Beijing says the allegations were made up and will jeopardize bilateral relations.

“I believe that this is highly politically motivated,” said Abayomi Azikiwe, an editor at Pan-African News Wire, in a phone interview with Press TV on Monday. He stressed that “mass media inside the United States as well as public organizations should look at this very critically.”

Washington’s charges against the Chinese officials come as intelligence leaks have revealed that the US itself is the most active perpetrator of cyber espionage against foreign countries, especially against China.

Documents revealed by American whistleblower Edward Snowden show the US National Security Agency (NSA) spied on former Chinese president Hu Jintao, the Chinese Trade Ministry as well as multiple Chinese banks and telecommunications companies.

Azikiwe said US spying operations targeted not only those Washington considers its foes but also those it considers friends like German Chancellor Angela Merkel and “members of the United States Congress, and members of the United Nations Security Council.”

“The US Congress should take action to prevent further abuses not only of the US residents but indeed people throughout the world,” he concluded.
