Attend this important class which will review the history and current role of imperialism in the West African country of Nigeria.
Over the last two months in the corporate media there has been considerable attention focused on the war in northeastern Nigeria between Boko Haram and the Federal Government. This internal conflict stems from the legacy of colonialism and the present neo-colonial system of class rule.
Nigeria, a former British colony, is the most populous state in Africa. Recently it was designated by the western-based financial institutions as having the largest economy on the continent. The country exports more oil into the United States than any other African state.
The abduction of nearly 300 high school girls by Boko Haram in the village of Chibok in Borno State has prompted mass demonstrations led by women inside the country demanding the student's release. This incident and Nigeria's strategic role involving oil imports into the U.S. and Europe, has led to greater military and intelligence intervention by the western imperialist states including Washington.
