Chad Envoy Meets President Mugabe

A special envoy from Chad Mr Thaisso Makaye and his delegation yesterday paid a courtesy call on President Mugabe at State House to deliver a special message from their President Idriss Deby.
Mr Makaye and his delegation held an hour-long meeting with the President before addressing members of the media.
Speaking through an interpreter after the meeting, Mr Makaye said their discussion centred on bilateral relations between Harare and N’Djamena.
“We are special envoys of President Idriss Deby to his brother President Mugabe — you know they have good relations,” he said. “We discussed bilateral co-operation and the meeting went on very well.”
Mr Makaye said President Mugabe and his Chadian counterpart shared a common vision on challenges confronting the continent and always consulted each other from time to time.
He refused to elaborate on the nature of his message to the President, insisting that it was not for public consumption.
“The special message was directed to His Excellency President Mugabe, so I cannot privy to the Press content of the message of President Deby to President Mugabe,” said Mr Makaye.
Mr Makaye, who is also the Chadian Minister of Higher Education, said Harare and N’Djamena enjoyed strong diplomatic ties.
He was accompanied by his country’s Finance Minister Kordje Bedoumra.
It is understood that Chad is interested in proposing its candidate for the African Development Bank presidency.
This comes in the wake of the expiry of the second five year term of the current president Mr Donald Kaberuka from Rwanda in May next.
In this context, Chad may already be canvassing support from fellow African countries for that post.
The core objective of the AfDB is to spur sustainable economic development and social progress in its regional member countries and to contribute towards poverty reduction.
