Arrests continue in fight against shutoffs

DETROIT — Hundreds from across the U.S. have joined Detroiters in their protest against the mass water shutoffs implemented by Detroit Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr and the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department. Two demonstration occurred July 18.

Beginning at 6:30 a.m., approximately 40 protesters managed to keep trucks from leaving to shut off water at Detroit residences for over four hours. Eventually, nine demonstrators were arrested, making way for Homrich, the company contracted at a cost of $5.6 million to execute the shutoffs, to resume their work.

Downtown, a coalition of Detroit activist groups led a march from Cobo Hall, where Netroots Nation is holding their 9th annual gathering, to Hart Plaza. Over a thousand demonstrators were present. Actor Mark Ruffalo and Congressman John Conyers were among those who addressed the crowd.
