Nigeria Labor Unrest: NAFDAC Staffs Embark on Indefinite Strike

WorldStage Newsonline-- Staff of National Agency for Food Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) on Wednesday embarked on indefinite strike action after the expiration of seven days ultimatum given to the management by their umbrella body, the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN).
Declaring the strike action, the Chairman of the area council of MHWUN, comrade Stephen Ibe who addressed the staffs of the organisation said that the union having given the management a sufficient time to address all their grievances, but pretended as if nothing happened, have no choice than to padlock the premises of the organization to all transactions throughout the federation including the sea and airport until their demand are met.
Ibe declared that “It is now or never, we have had series of meetings with all the stakeholders since last year march but to no avail, therefore the union has no choice than to declare indefinite strike action until their expectations are met.”
The Chairman who regretted that despite all dialogues the union had with the management to make sure that the crisis was resolved amicably, the Director General of the NAFDAC, Dr Paul Ohirii bluntly refused to listen to their plight.
According to him, some of the grievances of the union includes the upward review of Job Specific Allowance by National Salaries, Incomes and Wages and the immediate implementation of Skipping of CONRAISS by NAFDAC Management as directed by the extant circular, HCSF/EPO/EIR/63755/T1/192 on 4th Nov. 2014 based on National industrial Court Judgment in favour of JOHESU,
Others are all outstanding promotional arrears from 2012 to 2014, full payment of 13th month allowances, full payment of eight months pension arrears from May – Dec. 2012 for 2012 set of NAFDAC employees and the return of GMPS, Trainings, workshops and conferences (both domestic and foreign).
Ibe directed that all offices of NAFDAC throughout the country should be closed with immediate effect to any transaction, regretting that if the organisation could be generating about N700 million monthly and failed to take care of the welfare of its worker is an unfortunate and indictment on the management of NAFDAC.
