Making information and telecommunications technology a strategic development sector in the country is one of the central challenges facing experts in this area, and a national priority of concern to the highest levels of government leadership.

In this context, Cuba’s First National Digitalization and Cyber-security Workshop, which began yesterday February 18, represents an important step forward toward greater efficiency and better quality of life. Although the amount of work to be done is great, specialists emphasized that the country now has some three million users of digital networks, including institutional platforms, e-mail, and Internet.

While the expansion of services is reflected in the 2.5 million mobile phone users; 154 community Internet centers; and more than half a million mobile phone users with e-mail access.

Digital television in Havana and provincial capitals is now available to some 250,000 persons. Discussed during the inaugural session held in Havana, and transmitted to 20 sites across the country, was the development of basic policies on security measures; national priorities; and the creation of a national organization for information technology professionals.
