Saudi Warplanes Attack Military Base in Yemen's Taiz

Saudi warplanes have launched at least five airstrikes against a military base in the Yemeni city of Taiz, following the withdrawal of al-Qaeda militants.

According to reports, the airstrikes were launched late on Wednesday along with several other ones across the impoverished country.

The region of Safiah in Sa'ada province was targeted by three rockets while the region of Jada'an in Ma'rib province also came under attack.

The airstrikes were launched despite Riyadh Tuesday declared a halt to an air campaign it started on March 26.

Meanwhile, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called for an end to fighting in the Arab world’s poorest country, saying he "took note" of Saudi Arabia's announcement of an end to airstrikes.

Ban further voiced concerns over the resumption of fighting in Yemen.

Saudi Arabia’s military campaign was launched without a UN mandate in a bid to undermine the Ansarullah movement and to restore power to the country’s fugitive former president, Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, a staunch ally of Riyadh.

According to reports, nearly 1,000 people have been killed during the aggression.
