Egyptian Director Raafat El-Meehy Dies at 75

Egyptian director and scriptwriter Raafat El-Meehy died Friday afternoon in the Armed Forces Hospital in Cairo's upscale district of Maadi. Hewas born in 1940.
El-Meehy graduated from the English department at Cairo University's Faculty of Arts before going on to study film at the Academy of Arts in 1964. His cinematic work includes directing, scriptwriting, and producing.
As a scriptwriter, El-Meehy launched his career with the drama Gaffet El-Amtar (The Rain has Gone Dry) in 1967, directed by Sayed Essa and starring Shukry Sarhan, Samiha Ayyoub, and Naima Wasfy.
He later wrote Al-Hob Alazi Kan (1973), which featured even more stars of Egypt's cinema, including Soad Hosny and Mahmoud Yassine.
In the seventies, El-Meehy often collaborated with late Egyptian director Kamal El Sheikh, writing films like Gheroub Wa Sherouk (Sunset and Sunrise), Ala Man Natleq Al Rasas (Whom Should We Shoot?), Al Hareb (The Fugitive), and Shayaa Fi Sadri (Something Within Me).
His first significant work as a director came in 1981, in Oyun La Tanam (Sleepless Eyes), which he also wrote. The film starred Farid Shawqi, Madiha Kamel, and Ahmed Zaki.
El-Meehy also directed, produced, and wrote the script for films such as Al-Avokato (The Advocate) in 1984, starring Adel Imam, and Alshan Rabena Yehebak (For the Sake of God's Love) in 2001.
One of his latest works is the 2009 TV drama series, Wekalat Attia.
In 2014 he produced Merabet Lareng (2014), a short film that was directed by Ola Ezzeldin Hamouda.
