Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and Guyanese President David Granger have met on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly to discuss a border dispute between the South American nations.

The meeting took place Sunday with the mediation of U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

It came a day after Granger said the U.N.'s Netherlands-based International Court of Justice is the only answer to the territorial squabble. Granger said any attempt by him and Maduro to negotiate the matter alone would be useless, but he agreed to meet him with Ban Ki-moon's mediation.

The current border between the countries' was decided by international arbitration in 1899. But Venezuela claims about 40 percent of Guyana's territory and extended its claims recently after a subsidiary of Exxon Mobil Corp. announced an oil discovery off Guyana.
