We greatly appreciate the solidarity offered the African continent by our Cuban brothers and sisters, this is a visit of gratitude, stated Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, president of the African Union (AU) Commission, on being received this Wednesday, September 30, in Havana by the President of Cuba’s National Assembly of People’s Power (ANPP) Esteban Lazo Hernández.

“It is a privilege to officially welcome her, above all given that she is the first woman to occupy this position in the AU,” stated Lazo

The Cuban leader highlighted the significance of the organization, of which Cuba is an observer member, as well as its importance in dealing with conflict resolution in the region.

Both officials expressed their willingness to continue to work toward the implementation of the 2063 Agenda based on principles of cooperation between African countries and the South in general, one the most important points in the document.

Additionally, Lazo Hernández, reiterated Cuba’s gratitude for the AU’s historic support against the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the U.S. on the island, and in the struggle to free the Five Cuban anti-terrorist Heroes, who recently embarked on a tour of several African countries.

Dlamini-Zuma thanked Cuba for “what they have done for countries affected by the Ebola epidemic,” adding that “it was one of the few non-African nations to offer immediate assistance.”

”We never reached the expected infection rate thanks to you,” she noted.

Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma arrived in Havana on September 30, where she will complete an intense schedule of activities as part of her official visit; including a visit to the Pedro Kourí Institute of Tropical Medicine (IPK) and the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM), as well as the renewal of the Memorandum of Understanding between the African Union and Cuba.
