BALTIMORE (WJZ) — WJZ has learned the mother of Freddie Gray, the man who died in police custody last April, has attempted suicide.

Rick Ritter has more on what happened.

WJZ has confirmed with multiple sources in the past hour that Gloria Darden, the mother of Freddie Gray, tried to take her life late Wednesday night.

The call came in around 9:35 p.m. Wednesday for a person needing medical attention in a north Baltimore neighborhood.

Sources tell WJZ that’s where Gloria Darden, the mother of Freddie Gray, attempted suicide and sustained superficial wounds.

Sources say Darden was transported to a nearby hospital and no surgery or stitches were needed.

Darden’s son, 25-year-old Freddie Gray, was arrested back on April 12 and was injured when taken into police custody. He died a week later, triggering unrest throughout the city.

Just weeks ago, Baltimore awarded Gray’s family $6.4 million to settle civil claims.

Sources tell WJZ that Gray’s mother is currently undergoing a psychiatric evaluation.
