Academic activities in Imo State University, IMSU, and Federal University of Technology, FUTO, all in Owerri, have been grounded, following a marching order issued by the national leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to their members.
When Vanguard visited both institutions, Thursday, the lecture theatres were completely deserted. A staff of FUTO, who spoke on strict grounds of anonymity, explained that “some lecturers can be spotted in their respective offices”.
Speaking ahead of the warning strike, the IMSU-ASUU and FUTO-ASUU Chairmen, Dr. Chidi Nwadiaro and Dr. Ikenna Nwachukwu respectively, explained that the warming strike was to compel government to address the issues in the 2009 Federal Government/ASUU Agreement, as well as the Memorandum of Understanding of November 2013, and the funding for revitalization of public universities.
Nwachukwu also explained that “the strike is total and comprehensive”, adding that non-release of subventions to the state universities by their visitors are part of their problem.
The union leaders decried the non-payment of salaries to workers in the staff schools, exemption of universities from the Treasury Single Account by government ,despite repeated appeals.
All the students who spoke to Vanguard in the respective institutions, appealed to government to dialogue with ASUU and resolve the problems amicably.
“I am honestly sick and tired of the periodic breaks in my school’s academic calendar. Government should please dialogue with ASUU and save us from this nagging problem”, a female Sociology student lamented.
