Zambian President Edgar Lungu has sacked party stalwart and Information minister Chishimba Kambwili.

The move was likely to send shockwaves amongst the "original" Patriotic Front (PF) members who have been combined in a Cabinet with former governing party members of the Movement for Multiparty Democarcy (MMD).

Mr Kambwili’s dismissal was not explained in a statement issued by President Lungu’s spokesman Amos Chanda.

"Mr Edgar Lungu President of the Republic of Zambia has appointed Hon. Kampamba Mulenga, MP as Minister of Information and Broadcasting Services taking over from Hon. Chishimba Kambwili, MP, whose services have been terminated with immediate effect,” said the statement.

Succession wrangle

The founder member of PF, contested for party presidency at the height of a chaotic succession wrangle after the death of President Michael Sata in 2014.

Mr Lungu went on to win the nomination, national election and appointed Mr Kambwili in his first Cabinet.

The newly appointed government spokeswoman previously served as District Commissioner for a Copperbelt Province district Kalulushi before she entered active politics.
