NUM is Deeply Worried About Retrenchments at Bokoni Platinum in Limpopo

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) can confirm that it received Section 189 notice from Bokoni Platinum in Limpopo to retrench 2 651 workers. The number excludes contractors and it is much higher.
The company has served us with Section 189 notice of the Labour Relations with the intention of placing the company under care and maintenance, as the NUM we are opposing this based on the following factors;
The company is stating the financial loss or negative cash flow in their notice, however, the company did not engage with the union on the process to embark on a cost saving mechanism, so, therefore, we are not convinced why would the mine want to take this harsh decision to close the mine.
As things stand we are not sure whether the company has informed the Minister of Mineral Resources as per Section 52 of the MPRDA. The company was having a Future Forum structure which was established for the sake of compliance.
The company is a joint venture between Anglo American Platinum and ATLATSA which is 51% ATLATSA and in this case, the company did not disclose to us their audited financial status as per Section 16 of LRA, the same goes to Anglo American Platinum which owns 49% share Holding.
"The decision by Bokoni Platinum will lead to high rate of unemployment in surrounding communities and dozens of families would be plunged into poverty. We call on Bokoni Platinum to return the mining licence to the Department of Mineral Resources so that interested companies must take over. This company does not have the interest of the workers and the surrounding communities at all. They only care about profit," said Phillip Mankge, NUM North East Regional Secretary.
We, therefore, request the company to reconsider their position of s189 and come on board to deal with the issues raised by the union in the proper structural meeting.
