SACP Statement: Pathologists Blast Holes in Police Version of Events in the Death of Ahmed Timol
26 July 2017

Timol Severely Assaulted Prior To His Death

Statement from the Ahmed Timol Family Trust

Forensic pathologists Professor Steve Naidoo and Dr Shakeera Holland have blown gaping holes in the security police version of the events that led to the death in detention of anti-apartheid activist Ahmed Timol 46 years ago.

At the behest of the Timol family, the two specialists separately reviewed all available literature from the original Timol Inquest, including the post-mortem report and series of photographs attached thereto. They presented their reports today to the re-opened inquest sitting in the North Gauteng High Court.

Both concluded that Timol sustained major injuries before falling to the ground from a 10th floor window at John Vorster Square police station 4 days after being arrested.

Timol inquest: It`s time to hear from the police

Evidence of assault and torture was heard last week

The re-opened inquest into the death in detention of anti-apartheid activist Ahmed Timol 46 years ago enters its third week today with the cross examination of former members of the police.

According to the police version of events, Timol was well-treated during his detention and interrogation, and committed suicide by jumping from a 10th floor window.

Magistrate De Villiers, who conducted the original inquest, used words such as "honest and trustworthy" and "reliable" to describe the security policemen who appeared before him at the inquest.
