MATANZAS.– First Vice President of the Councils of State and Ministers, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, emphasized that reestablishing operations at the Antonio Guiteras thermoelectric plant, severely damaged by Hurricane Irma, is a priority task at this time.

Diaz-Canel, also a Party Political Bureau member, noted that it was very difficult to compensate for the energy generated by this plant, and that demand is already greater than needed to activate all the circuits that have been repaired.

Yesterday, September 13, he visited the Matanzas facility and confirmed progress made thus far, stressing the importance of restoring the plant's full generating capacity as soon as possible, given the direct impact it has on the population and production centers.

Alcides Meana Báez, an engineer who participated in the construction of Antonio Guiteras, explained that they had removed all debris from the "circulation house" and were checking the motors, to then confirm the condition of pumps that supply sea water to cool the tower.

During the tour, Diaz-Canel spoke with many operators and specialists about the technical details involved in the repair process, and praised authorities for quickly establishing the steps to be taken to get the plant back on line as soon as possible.

Despite the magnitude and complexity of the task, Rubén Campos, plant director, accepted Diaz-Canel's request to do everything humanly possible to accelerate the work, without neglecting quality, saying: We are going to accomplish this.
