Essence of DPRK-US Showdown
Pyongyang Times

The DPRK-US confrontation is the showdown between the US, which has been engrossed in the extreme anti-DPRK policy and nuclear blackmail for over half a century, and the DPRK, which has striven to protect its rights to sovereignty, existence and development from the US.

The US started to pursue the policy hostile towards the DPRK with the conclusion of the Second World War as it had already harboured a wild ambition in the mid-19th century to conquer Korea, regarding it as a point of strategic importance in implementing its strategy of domination of Asia.

The US that occupied the southern half of Korea after its liberation in August 1945 made frantic moves to prevent the people’s government in north Korea from enforcing various democratic reforms in an attempt to put north Korea under its control. When the DPRK was founded representing the will of all the Korean people in September 1948, it repudiated the Republic and officially pursued the outrageous anti-DPRK policy by including it in the target of COCOM in November 1949 and imposing sanctions and blockade on it. In the period of the Cold War, the US shipped into south Korea more than 1 700 tactical nuclear weapons and infringed the rights to existence and development of the Korean people and their state by staging large-scale nuclear war games. Even after the Cold War era, it persisted in the worst-ever nuclear blackmail, designating the DPRK as part of an “axis of evil” and “target of preemptive nuclear strike”.

This notwithstanding, the US is misleading the public into believing that the confrontation between the DPRK and the US is that between the DPRK and the international community.

The US attempts to stir up fear of the DPRK’s nukes, vilify its possession of them for self-defence, reject the historical circumstances that compelled it to have them and the justice of the possession, and demonize, isolate and stifle the country.

The ghost image of “north Korea-international community confrontation” is being created as the US moves are irresponsibly followed by the pro-American allies that regard subservience to it as their fate, the big countries that try to promote their national interests and maintain the big country-oriented order through cooperation with it and some other countries that mistake the siding with it for the general trend of the times.

Any responsible power that exerts influence on international politics should explore a realistic solution by squarely seeing the circumstances in which the days when the US threatened the DPRK with nuclear weapons have gone for good and war is being deterred by the DPRK’s nukes in the Korean peninsula.

It is time for those countries that jump on the US anti-DPRK bandwagon to come to their senses.

It will be wise to see as it is the reality that the US is desperate to find a way out of the extreme internal and external predicament.

Trump who clamoured for the “rebuilding of the strongest US army” during the presidential campaign has expanded the defence budget for the 2018 fiscal year to nearly $700 billion. He has cancelled the reduction plan fixed by the preceding administration in order to increase the ground force from 500 000 to 540 000, the number of naval vessels from 276 to 355 and that of fighters from 1 100 to 1 200.

What is more serious is that this lunatic is openly revealing the intention to sharply boost the number of nuclear weapons to the “level of the 1960s”, or 32 000, by squandering an astronomical amount of fund on the project for such advanced small tactical nukes as B61-12.

If they join the US’ anti-DPRK moves, entrapped by its hackneyed appeasement and blackmail, while turning a blind eye to the urgent reality, they may well make a large fortune today, but will invite a shower of fire tomorrow.

Even though the “superpower” puts forth an assertion and its lackeys give support to that, this is not the general trend of the times, and even a resolution of the UN Security Council is not the unanimous will of the international community if it is adopted under the pressure of the “superpower”.

The DPRK-US showdown will not terminate unless the US gives up the policy of hostility to the DPRK and nuclear threat, the root cause of the confrontation.

The DPRK finally accomplished the historic cause of the national nuclear arms programme with the successful November 29 test-fire of a new type of ICBM Hwasong 15 capable of striking the whole of the US mainland.

Any country that truly wants global peace and security should clearly discern the new reality in the Korean peninsula and the trend of the times and exert influence and pressure on the US so as to make it abandon the anti-DPRK policy and nuclear blackmail before it is too late.
