19 January 2018
The Congress of South African Trade Unions condemns the shooting of the NUM branch chairperson of Eastern Platinum Mine at Lonmin unknown assailants in Bapong village near Brits. We send our message of solidarity to the family and wish them speedy recovery. The federation is also demanding that the SAPS set up a special Task team to investigate the violence in the mining sector.
The ongoing violence in the mining sector that has left many workers dead or injured and there are not enough perpetrators in prison over these attacks. This scourge of violence will not be eradicated if the vigilantes and assassins responsible for the violence in the mining sector are still allowed to prowl the mining sector and roam free.
We continue to call for calm in the mining sector and COSATU remains committed to peace amongst workers and strongly support the principle of Freedom of Association, especially for the working class.
