Egypt to Chair African Union Summit in 2019

President El-Sisi is currently in Addis Ababa for the 30th Arab Summit

Egypt was elected by African leaders in Addis Ababa to head the African Union's upcoming 31st session in 2019, the Egyptian presidency announced.

In a statement issued Sunday, Egyptian presidency spokesman Bassam Radi stated that Egypt would be a member in the troika of the African Commission in the African Union, which includes the current, previous and upcoming presidents of the African Union.

The current chairperson of the African Union is Rwandan President Paul Kagame.

The 30th African Union Summit kicked off Sunday in Addis Ababa with the participation of President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi as well as 54 African leaders.

The 30th ordinary session is being held under the theme, “Winning the Fight against Corruption: A Sustainable Path to Africa’s Transformation.”
