US President Donald Trump’s so-called America First policy has emboldened white supremacist groups across the country, including on US college campuses,  an African American journalist in Detroit says.

“This is clearly related to the ascendency of Donald Trump… His America First doctrine is definitely related to the notion that whites have some inherent right to control and rule the United Sates,” saod Abayomi Azikiwe editor of the Pan-African News Wire.

Azikiwe noted that Trump’s rhetoric as president regularizes his racist agenda and emboldens supremacists to lash out at people of color, leaving minorities with no refuge.

Racist activity on the rise in US colleges

The Anti-Defamation League said Thursday that its Center on Extremism had recorded at least 346 instances in which far-right groups had handed out leaflets, stickers, posters and banners on more than 200 campuses across the US.

A year into Trump's presidency, white supremacist groups are targeting US colleges more than ever.
To put that in perspective, the group said while there were only 41 such cases in the 2016 fall semester, the number had more than tripled over the same period a year later, reaching 147 cases.

"White supremacists continue to see young people as prime targets for recruitment, perhaps now more than ever," said Oren Segal, director of the ADL’s Center on Extremism.

The white supremacists had targeted colleges in 44 states and Washington DC, while the most frequent targets were located in the states of Texas and California.
